Once Hitler gained power he quickly began to mobilize for war. Germany withdrew from the League of Nations and Hitler announced a massive expansion of the armed forces. He also built up the main concept of racial hygiene. He put in place new laws that banned marriage between non-jews and jews in Germany and deprived non-aryans of benefits of citizenship. Also his early eugenic policies targeted children with physical and mental disabilities, and later authorized a euthenasia program for disabled adults.
The Holocaust was also conducted under the control of racial hygiene. The Holocaust was responsible for the deaths of 11 to 14 million people, including about 6 million jews and two-thirds of the jews in Europe.
In 1938 Hitler invaded Poland and France and Britain declared war, beginning World War II. He then began to conquer most of Europe spreading the Nazi power. Russia began to fight back after Hitler violated a non aggression act by sending troops into the Soviet Union. The US later joined the war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor by Japan, an ally of Germany. Stacked against the odds, Hitler's military judgment became erratic and the military and economy of Germany deteriorated along with his health.
By early 1945, Hitler knew that he was going to lose the war. The Soviets had made their way deep into Western Europe and the Allies were advancing into Germany. On April 29, 1945 he married his girlfriend Eva Braun in a small ceremony in his bunker in Berlin. The next day, they both committed suicide in fear of falling into the hands of the enemy. By May 2nd Berlin had fallen and on May 7th Germany surrendered.
